Interesting that you should say so.

In the US, a corporation now is a considered to be a person in the legal sense. So if we're willing to bestow upon a business - a non-living logical entity - our recognition as a "person", why the hesitation to label other living things as such?

I'm not arguing for exactly the same legal rights (that it's right and proper to will your cat your estate, for example); I'm only asking people to consider their non-human companions as more than "pets" - a word that suggests they're mere objects. The "you-can-always-get-another-one" mentality offends me.

Well, a 'person' to me is a pretty clear term - it's a human being. A homo sapiens.

As for being TREATED like a person - yes, any living being that is part of your life deserves to be treated like a person. And any living being in general - right down to that icky spider/bug you wanted to squash yesterday or that chicken you just ate - deserves be be treated with at least a basic respect for life.

Food for thought:
What if you treated non-living things as if they were people? What if you treated your current project or even your company as if it were a living breathing thing with its own will + volition? My theory is that the great innovators or business leaders instinctively do because they are personally invested in the success + failure of what they create. Does that make sense?

Many thanks for this: it helped me enormously when integrating some classes that use ARC, and therefore therefor needed the -fobjc-arc flag.

Though this seems to have become the most popular blog post on the subject, I still see plenty of recent reports of the same old tactic around the web. More than likely, the lady you spoke to was new and was either indoctrinated into the hard retention/up-sell mindset or lost her job due to poor numbers.

I'm just a tad bit hard-headed, so sparks tend to fly when I not only receive poor customer service but am actively blocked from firing a service. That just won't fly with me.

I almost believe society tends to label this need to be liked as undesirable behavior for the same reasons they label any passion-motivated action. The (Victorian?) idea of "polite society" seems to label any emotional action as giving in to animalistic tendencies. This "enlightened" view forgets one key fact: we are animals. Granted, we're (arguably) more civilized animals, but this black-and-white behavioral judgment is harmful, I think. It's an outdated system of thought that we acknowledge as silly these days. Case in point: "A lady does not shout excitedly." (and every variant thereof)

Even if there is no God, afterlife, spiritual consequence, whatever, do we still want to spend our lives feeling bad about our actions (or others') because "in polite society, one does not apologize as it makes one seem needy." Seems ridiculous when you look at it that way, doesn't it? :-)

Like you said, we all want to be liked to a certain degree. However, I disagree with the notion that atonement stems from that desire, alone. It's entirely possible to simply feel remorse for treating someone badly, and wanting to share those feelings with them.

I appreciate it when someone genuinely apologizes to me. When I apologize to someone, it's partly for my benefit, but also partly for their's. Does a heartfelt apology not provide both parties with a feeling of relief, whether you're the one getting it off your chest, or the one whose feelings have been acknowledged?

I don't have one easily accessible yet but if you create a (free) account on the site and go to the Errata page, the entire TOC is basically there as a placeholder for future errata. I'll likely spend some time on the weekend adding more information about the book to the site, including available e-formats (and where you can buy them). Stay tuned. :-)
